The Nepal Literature Festival is Nepal’s only international literature festival. Since its inception in 2011, it has been bringing together many national and international writers for a celebration of the written word.
The four-day festival is a wonderful opportunity for readers to listen to and interact with world renowned writers. It also gives the lovers of Nepali literature the much-needed international exposure while also making sure that international writers are given an overview of the Nepali literary scene. It also opens up possibilities for literary translations. In this annual event, more than a hundred Nepali writers and a few selected international writers are invited to talk on various issues they have written about in. Topics are varied.
The festival hosted famous names like Vinod Mehta, Shobha De, Amish Tripathi, Ned Beauman, Tishani Doshi, Sir Mark Tully, Shashi Tharoor, Barkha Dutt, Prajwal Parajuly, in the past.
The initial four editions of the festival were held in Kathmandu, while the fifth edition was held in the picturesque city of Pokhara in an attempt to take the festival outside Kathmandu. The Pokhara Literature Festival turned out to be so successful that the organizers have decided to hold the successive editions of the festival in Pokhara.
The festival has been spoken about in glowing terms for its contribution towards raising the spirits of Nepali literature lovers. Now the festival gets a mention whenever there is a talk about the rise of literary festivals in South Asia.
